Yaesu FT450D 1/2 wave end fed

Yaesu FT450D

I just started armature radio in 2024. I always wanted to get into this. I bought the FT450D as recommended by W1PO. My goal is to ease into this without jumping into a complicated radio and antenna system. I was fortunate enough to start out with my general license because my background is strong in electronics. I only had to learn the armature radio portion to get my license.

A half wave end fed seemed like a simple and easy way to get started. It's easy to deploy and offers multiple band operation.

My plan is to experiment with FT8. I like the idea of being able to send digital transmissions. The more I read about FT8, the more impressed I am with the format. I especially like the low bandwidth of 50Hz. The fact it uses so little power lends the format well to emergency use in mobile situations. I'm toying with the idea of building a computer module that has a microcontroller and transmitter on board that will be powered by a single 3 volt battery. In theory, this should work. Add a small solar panel and now you have a fully functional off-grid FT8 transceiver. Pair this will a small mobile phone, now you have a complete interface.

My background is mostly software development and IoT. I especially like the ESP32 series of microcontrollers. I'm always amazed at what these devices can do. I plan on utilizing them for amateur radio.
